The calculated quantil)of water pumped the whole year is about 740,000,000 gallons, or over2,000,000 gallons per day. (The pumping ca])acity is 4,000,000 gal-lons per day). * * * The pumps, reservoirs and superstructureshave been inspected and found to be in a fair and serviceable MESSRS. F. D. In but one instance have the flames assumed anymagnitude—this at the factory of Messrs. WVight & Craighill—andwhich had attained such headway when the alarm was given as to bebeyond the power of mortals to suppress. The loss in this instanceamounted to some $24,000. In the remaining forty-five cases, onlysome $5,000 was lost, a total of only about $29,000 for the year ; avery moderate sum as compared with the immense losses heraldedalmost daih from every section of the country.
