A woman on a horse waving to people in the crowd on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh before the annual Riding of the Marches ceremony. The annual event took place in the historic city centre and was the culmination of the common ridings in which men and women on horseback checked the old town boundaries. On the 18th of September 2014, the people of Scotland voted in a referendum to decide whether the union should continue or Scotland should become an independent nation once again.
