Eyelid disorder. Close-up of the partially retracted eyelid of 34 year-old female patient after an eye operation to correct thyrotoxicosis. Thyrotoxicosis is caused by an overactive thyroid gland. It can result in excessive pressure behind the eye which needs surgical correction. In this case the operation to correct thyrotoxicosis has resulted in the malfunctioning of the muscle that lifts the upper eyelid, known as a retractor. The patient is therefore unable to completely retract her upper eyelid.
