Serax (oxazepam), 15 mg capsules. Oxazepam is used to relieve anxiety, including anxiety caused by alcohol withdrawal (symptoms that may develop in people who stop drinking alcohol after drinking large amounts for a long time). Oxazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines, which are a type of depressant. A depressant is a drug that depresses the function or activity of a specific part of the brain. Effects include anxiolysis, pain relief, sedation or somnolence, cognitive/memory impairment, as well as in some instances euphoria, dissociation, muscle relaxation, lowered blood pressure or heart rate, respiratory depression, and anticonvulsant effects; complete anesthesia or death at can result at high doses.
