Schorne Well, North Marston, Buckinghamshire. Legend says that John Schorne performed two miracles. The first was striking the ground during a period of drought and a well gushed out which had miraculous powers of healing, and the second conjuring up the devil and capturing him in a boot. The water’s were said to be beneficial in healing gout, ague, rheumatism, and eye disorders. This chalybeate spring became the main water supply of the village. It continued to supply water to villagers into the twentieth century. John Schorne’s Well can still be found today, down Schorne Lane, approximately 150 yards from St Mary’s church. The well is protected by a wooden shelter and has a statue of John holding the Devil under his arm. A lead boot rests on the edge of the water trough.
