Seth Williams, son of the Hon. Daniel and Mary (Sa^N-telle) WilUams, wasborn in Augusta, Me., Maich 24, 1822, and died unmarried, in Boston, Mass.,March 23, 1866; was bm-ied in Augusta. He attended the schools of hiscity and entered the University in 1836, remaining until 1838, when he receivedan appointment to the U. S. Mihtary Academy. He graduated from West Point, July 1, 1842; was commissioned brevet 2dlieutenant, July 1, 1842, 2d Ueutenant 1st U. S. Aitillery, August 31, 1844; wasassigned to Duncans Battery and served in Texas; was promoted 1st lieutenantsame regiment, ]\Iarch 3, 1847, and served during the ^lexican War; was dis-tinguished for bravery at the battles of Palo Alto and Cerro Gordo and at thesiege of Vera Cruz; served for some time as mihtary governor of Matmoras;served on the staff of General Patterson, on th^ march from Vera Cruz to thecity of ;
