Urban street sidewalk scene heavily-tattooed man selling theatre tickets, near New Amsterdam Theatre, West 42nd Street, New York

Late afternoon autumn sunshade view West 42nd Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues, looking towards the Hudson River in the far background. For long periods in the mid-20th century the 42nd Street area near Times Square and 7th Avenue was home to unsavoury activities, including sex industry peep shows and grindhouse theatres. In 1990 the City Government, encouraging a clean-up, took over six historic theatres between 7th and 8th Avenues. Since the mid-1990s the area has become home again to legitimate theatres (both live and movie). To signify the change, the area is referred to as 'New 42nd Street'. A heavily-tattooed man seen here selling tickets on the sidewalk near the New Amsterdam Theatre, which the Disney Corporation bought in 1993 and renovated it for live theatre.
