A medical staff small-sword, United States, as worn from 1830 to 1850. Blade with lenticular cross-section and floral etching, displaying the heraldic eagle and the "E pluribus unum" motto on both sides. The obverse side bears the maker's inscription, " Horstmann & Sons, Philadelphia". Contoured, gilded brass knuckle-bow hilt with the nickel silver initials, "MS", applied on the obverse languet.
