Far more abundant than the Herring, and occurring at times on all partsof our Atlantic coast, is the Menhaden, Brcvoortia tyraiimis. This specieshas at least thirty popular names, most of them limited in their use withinnarrow geographical boundaries. To this circumstance may be attributedthe prevailing ignorance regarding its habits and migrations, among ourfishermen, which has perhaps prevented the more extensive utilization ofthis fish, particularly in the
