Lakes of Ounianga. Satellite image of the Lakes of Ounianga area in the Ennedi region of Chad. These lakes are in a basin in the Sahara Desert, in the mountains of West Tibesti and Ennedi East. Unique physical factors keep most of the lakes fresh, when normally lakes in such arid areas would be saline. The area was made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2012. This image was obtained by the SPOT 6 satellite on 23 January 2013.
