NYC Subway Construction, 1915


A Westchester Electric Railroad streetcar is heading to its 177th Street terminal along White Plains Road. Meanwhile a steam crane works atop the elevated trestle to complete the IRT White Plains Line. The Dual Contracts, signed on March 19, 1913, were for the construction and/or rehabilitation and operation of rapid transit lines in the City of New York. The contracts were were signed between the City and the Interborough Rapid Transit Company and the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company, all working together. The Dual Contracts promised the construction of several lines in the Bronx. The IRT agreed to extend the existing West Farms Division from 179th Street to 241st Street as an elevated line along White Plains Road. Portions of the White Plain Road Line were opened at different times, and they opened once constructed finished on a particular segment, as opposed to waiting for the completion of the entire line. The first segment, from East 177th Street-East Tremont Avenue to East 219th Street-White Plains Road, opened on March 3, 1917, providing access to rapid transit service to the communities of Williamsbridge and Wakefield in the Bronx.
