When the obstruction is only partial, the mucus maybe well charged with bile, as the backward pressure is notsufficient to stop the secretion and pouring out of bile intothe ducts. Specimen 1,420 in Guys Museum shows dilated bile-ductsin the liver holding a pint of clear mucus (Fig. 10). There IN FLA MM A TOR Y A FFECTIONS 27 was a small cancerous growth in the common duct. Case 35is a good example of a similar condition, but in it theobstruction was due to gall-stones. As a concomitant of cancer of the liver or of the bile-ducts, chronic catarrh is common, and is frequently the causeof the accompanying icterus. This accounts for the relief to. The same remarks apply to hydatid disease, to abscess, andto other organic diseases of the liver. 28 DISEASES OF THE GALL-BLADDER AND BILE-DUCTS Cases 152, 157, and i6t are good examples of chroniccatarrhal jaundice produced by the irritation of hydatid cystsin the liver, the catarrh and its accompaniment (jaundice)being cured by the removal of the cause. Gall-stones are probably always accompanied by catarrh, giving rise to the formation of thick ropy mucus, whichleads to attacks of pain when passing, and it seems notunlikely that some of the min
