Abouta century later the west front of the church was damaged by a storm and was re-built. At the close of the 14th century Richard de Croyland, a monk and a nativeof the place, succeeded to the Abbotship and rebuilt the eastern extremity of thechurch on a scale of magnificence superior to the neighboring churches of theprovince.
