The new president received hispreliminary education in Omaha,and made his College studies atThe Cr eight on University, subse-quently spending four years at theJesuit Novitiate, Florissant, Miss-ouri, and three years at St. LouisUniversity. He was ordained in1910. For three years he was vice-president of St. Louis University. Major Henry L. He sailed forFrance on January 29, 1918, aschief surgeon of the Thirty-fifthengineers, and landed at BrestFebruary 15, 1919. The samemonth he was sent with his regi-ment to La Rochelle, 120 milesnorth of Bordeaux, where the en-gineers established a mammothcar building plant. While at LaRochelle Major Akin superintend-ed the establishment of a hospitalthree miles from the city and onJuly 21st was sent to assume com-mand of the place, which was des-ignated as the base hospital fordistrict 67. He remained thereuntil March 1st of the presentyear, when he was ordered toParis, and was assigned to thearmy educational he remained until his de-parture for America on the GreatNorthern.
