Louis XVI Stopped at Varennes
King Louis XVI, his wife Marie Antoinette, and their children attempted to flee France and the French Revolution. An alert postmaster, Jean Baptiste Drouet, alerted the local patriot militia in Varennes, and militia members halted the flight of the royals and had them brought back to Paris. The date was June 20, 1791.
