Keep and main Gateway of Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland
Bamburgh Castle is sited on top of a large basalt outcrop overlooking the North Sea, in the northern county of Northumberland, UK. It is privately owned but open to the public for most of the year, and is a major tourist attraction in the area. The castle has a very long history and has seen many enhancements and new building work over the centuries. A fort built by ancient Britons was located on the site from the 1st century. It was extended by the Normans in the 11th century. In the 19th century, the Victorian industrialist William Armstrong comprehensively restored the castle.
