A couple crossing the Kleidonia stone, arched bridge, over Voidomatis river, close to Konitsa town. Ioannina, Epirus, Greece

You can find this bridge (Kleidonia bridge) very close to the road that goes from Ioannina to Konitsa, about 17 km before you reach Konitsa. It is located at the exit of the magnificent Vikos Gorge, where the plains of Kleidonia start, at a "crossover" landscape and it was constructed in 1853. Responsible for the construction of the bridge was Balkiz Hanum, wife (?) of Malik Pasha, who gathered grossia, and took all the expences. The river that flows below is Voidomatis. It may seem very calm in the photo, but that's why at the time of year the photo was taken, the water is at its lowest level. During winter and especially during spring when the snow starts to melt it becomes a fierce one and it's considered one of the best rivers in Greece for rafting. Photo taken from a path (on my back while taking the photo), that goes right besides the river and after 40 minutes walk, reaches to the beautiful, abandoned monastery of Agioi Anargyroi After another 40 minutes walk you can reach to the bridge between Aristi and Papigo villages. A really beautiful trek!
