Section II.—Detailed Description of the Diseases of theMouth, Tongue, Fauces, Pharynx, Larynx, and (Esophagus. INFLAMMATION OF THE MOJJTB.—Stomatitis. The mouth is specially liable to various forms of inflammation inchildren. They have received the name of stomatitis. Theseinflammations are expressed as follow: (1.) Simple erythema; (2.) The series of Wood-cuts show the Larynx from Moderate Closure to Full ;. A. The beginning of hermetic closure of thelarynx—commencement of act of cushion of the glottis (e. t<;.), applies itselfover a considerable portion of the closed glot-tis, and of the narrowed false glottis. B. Condition of the interior of the larynxduring the production of most acute glottis is contracted in a linear form ; andon each side are the (inferior) vocal cords (i. ), distinguished by their whitish-yellow little to the outer side is a narrow groovewhich indicates the ventricles of MorgagniFarther outwards are the false or superiorvocal cords (s. v. c). C. Constriction of the glottis, erroneouslycalled respiratory glottis, the arytenoid pro-cesses converging, and causing the posteriorsection of the glottis to be almost triangular. D. Complete relaxation of all the parts, aswhen the glottis under ordinary circumstancesis open for breathing. E. Bifurcation of trachea and commence-ment of bronchial
