Crowds at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival laughing as a street artist performs on the Royal Mile
Crowds at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival laughing as a street artist performs on the Royal Mile. The Edinburgh festival began as a post war initiative to reunite Europe through culture. At that time 8 uninvited theatre companies turned up and fended for themselves. A critic the following year dubbed the gatecrashers' enterprise - the fringe of the official festival drama - and the name and spirit of the fringe was born.
