. Railway mechanical engineer . AN IMPROVED KEY BOLT FOR PARALLELRODS BY J. H. HAHNAssistant Roundhouse Foreman, Norfolk & Western. Bluefield, W. Va. The illustration shows an improved key bolt for securingthe bushings in locomotive side rods. The liushings are ap-plied in the usual way and the rod and bushing drilled, thebushing being tapped to receive the key bolt, which is appliedwith a stud driver and screwed up to the shoulder good andtight. The rod and the bushing is drilled in one operationand, owing to the fact that the hole in the bushing is smallerthan the hole in the rod, a drill having two sizes is madeespecially for the purpose. Also in tapping the bushing asmall case liardened bushing that serves as a guide for thetap is inserted in the bushing and, after tapping the hole inthe rod Iiushing, is removed. On the heavier classes of locomotives considerable troubleis experienced with the bushings getting loose, and whenever WrougMImn SJipfiHnK„d. Key Bolt for Holding Bushings in Side Rods this happens it becomes necessary to remove the rods andshim the bushings, and when a middle connection side rodhas to be removed for loose bushings it means quite an itemfor labor and time the engine is out of service. This rodkey bolt was designed to eliminate a great deal of thistrouble. If, when this key bolt is used, the bushing getsloose in the rod it can be held firmly in place by tighteningthe inside nut shown on the stud and locking it with the locknut. As an additional precaution a cotter can be applied tothe end of the stud. This will securely hold the bushingand permit additional mileage. As a matter of fact this canbe repeated until the bushing becomes too large for the pinwhen, of course, it will become necessary to apply a newbushing. The writer has applied quite a number of these key boltsand has always found them satisfactor)-. The key boltscan be made on a turret lathe and carried in stock ready foruse. RAILWAY WOMEN EMPLOYE
