Jean-Florent de Vallière, 1667-1759, French artillery officer in the Army of Louis XV. He was promoted to Director General of the Battalions and Artillery Schools, and under the Ordonnance Royale of 1732, regulating the casting and testing of guns and mortars, he became responsible for reorganizing and standardizing the King's artillery by imposing simpler and more uniform weapons. He thus developed the de Vallière system, which set the standard for French artillery. Despite improvements, in the Vallière System no distinction had been made between campaign and siege equipment and it did not remedy the the problems of mobility. The dominance of French artillery lasted only ten years before being superseded by the Prussians. After 1765, the Vallière System was replaced by the Gribeauval System which contributed greatly to the Napoleonic victories.
