After the scholar Pan Kuan died, he became the Guardian of the Living and the Dead in the Otherworld.


In Chinese mythology, Pan Kuan was a scholar who became a magistrate. After he died, he became the Guardian of the Living and the Dead in the Otherworld. His best-known achievement was his prolonging the life of the Emperor T'ai Tsung (Taizong) of the Tang dynasty by 20 years. He is pictured here in this illustration dating to about 1922.
