African buffalo (Syncerus caffer). This large, cow-like animal can reach heights of metres and can weigh up to 750 kilograms. Both sexes have two low, curved horns, which have a large boss (protuberance) between them. The African buffalo lives on the savannahs and woodlands of sub- Saharan Africa, eating grass and other vegetation. It is a social animal often found in herds numbering over 1000 individuals.
