H. Croft, Professor of Chemistry in the Univer-sity. The present Dean of theFaculty of Applied Science joinedthe Company as private onmatriculating in 1863 and retiredwith the rank of captain in Company served as a unitin the Fenian Raid of 1866 andwas represented in the RedRiver Expedition of 1870, in theNorth West Field Force of1885 and in the South African. war. For many years the Univer-sity Rifles served as a nurseryfor officers of the CanadianMilitia, a large number of field officers of militiabattalions having received theirfirst military training whileundergraduates of the Univer-sity. Several general officersserving in the present war,among them the lamented Gen-eral Mercer are in this category. On the retirement in 1883 ofProfessor Alfred Baker from of the Company, theclose connection of the Univer-sity with the Queens Own Rifleswhich had subsisted for morethan twenty years graduallyceased on account^of the diffi-culty of accommodating drill
