Triassic Earth

Ideal landscape of the Middle Triassic Period, from fossils found in the German Muschelkalk deposits. Illustration from Louis Figuier's The World Before the Deluge, 1867 American edition. The reptile on the rock is Nothosaurus. Labyrinthodon leaves its footprints on the sandy shore. Early mollusks (Mytilus), brachiopods (Terebratula) and crinoids are exposed by the receding waves. On the shore is a coniferous forest of Haidingeras, reminiscent of cedars, and Voltzias.
