Beautiful But Dangerous. The Coast Guard Cutter, Tampa, cruises around a big iceberg, while the cooperating plane flies overhead to check position, drift, and so on, with the Cutter's data on this particular white menace. The spring of 1946, when this shot was made, saw the resumption of the International Ice Patrol work which had been interrupted by the War. It also saw the first use of planes in this work. Both the plane and the Tampa, together with the Tampa's sister ships, Modoc and Mojave, were based at Argentia, Newfoundland, during the Ice Patrol season.
