Rare endemic Swiss tulip. This is a Tulipa grengiolensis tulip, and is found only near the village of Grengiols, Switzerland, in a small alpine field called the Chalberweid. This tulip species became known beyond the village when a visiting botanist discovered it in 1946. Tulips were introduced to Europe from Turkey in the 16th century. It is thought that this tulip species was introduced to the area accidentally, possibly in wagons of wheat. The tulip took root and grew with the rye crops grown in the area. As the amount of rye cultivation has decreased, the tulip is now endangered. In 1998, a project to reverse this decline was started.
