The spring was named in honor of the founder of the Ai-Todor estate, Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich, who acquired the local lands in 1869. In 1904, Grand Duke George Mikhailovich (the son of Mikhail Nikolaevich) began to arrange his own estate, called Charax. The first building in the new Charax estate was a water intake system. The elegant floor-to-ceiling booth was built of local limestone with mosaic masonry with an insert of ornamental parts carved from the same stone, and covered with English tiles. Above the entrance there are inscriptions artfully carved in a stone slab: "Mikhailovsky spring. The year is 1907. Characters".
