Electrical news and engineering . reet is swept from the curbinwardly towards the railway tracks by the ordinaryhorse sweepers, driven in the opposite direction fromthe usual way of sweeping from the centre to the out-side. The refuse is then taken up by the self-loading instantly at any point desired. The brushes, steel cas-ings, and rubber aprons are so constructed as to workin either direction automatically. The cars are drivenpreferably by a stationary motor placed directly overthe brushes on the operating platform of the car, thebrush being operated from a counter-shaft by sprocketwheels and chain. The brush, which has been specially manufactured forthe purpose, makes five revolutions to each one of a carwheel. It works much on the same principle as a car-pet sweeper, and will throw the dust a distance oftwenty-five feet. Its capacity is about twentv-eightcar loads. The broom, which is fastened to solid heavyaxles, is so arranged that it always fills the case inwhich it is contained, a simple but ingenious device. car at any desired speed and conveyed to the desiredlocation. The car shown herewith is 22 feet in length, 8 feetwide and 9}^ feet high, very compactly and stronglybuilt in every section. It is fitted with all the appliancesfor electricity common to a regular trolley car. Con-trary to general use the brakes, motors, etc., are allsituated above the wheels and axles so as not to impedethe full action of the brush. The operating platform onwhich the persons stand while directing the motion of thecar and broom is 8x5 feet, and so placed as to protectthem from being touched by the dust thrown from therevolving brush or broom. The results are accomplished mainly by placing alarge rotary brush across the centre of a moving car,aid brushes being covered with steel casings, withproper outlets for discharging the sweepings into thebody of the car, and covering the brushes with said steelplates, having rubber aprons fitting the high speed of the
