Use of a blue argon laser beam to remove a pigmented birthmark (naevus - haemangioma) on a woman's cheek. The woman (under general anaeshetic administered by the tube in her throat) has her right eye protected by a heavy cloth; her left eye is covered by a lead shield to protect undamaged tissue from the long-exposures to the laser beam. The beam passes over the birthmark in strips, being well abosrbed by the blood vessels of the heavily vascular-ised birthmark. The vessels coagulate & scar & in a short period of time the scarring is replaced by healthy tissue growing between the strips. Surface skin, sweat glands & hair follicles are unaffected.
