Johann Gottfried Galle (1812-1910), German astronomer. Galle worked at the Berlin Observatory before becoming director of the Breslau Observatory (now in Wroclaw, Poland). In 1846 he received the results of calculations by French mathematician Urbain Leverrier, which predicted the position of a new planet. Using these calculations, Galle became the first to view Neptune and identify it as a planet. He also discovered the inner Crepe Ring of Saturn in 1838.
