On our way some remarks were made concern-ing the Scripture history of this river. The armies of Israelpassed it on dry land right over against Jericho. Elijah tookhis mantle and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, andthey were divided hither and thither. Here, also, Elisha cried,Where is the Lord God of Elijah 7 and smote the waters andthey divided. Here, at the baptism of our Savior, were theheavens opened, and Lo, a voice from heaven saying. This ismy beloved Son, in whom I am well The Jordan. At five oclock, stood on the banks of the Jordan. Thepilgrims all rushed into the stream and plunged themselves be-neath the sacred waters. 272 REV. LEVI PARSONS. At six, left the Jordan and bent our course toward theDead Sea. Arrived at half past seven oclock ; the water ofthe Dead Sea is excessively bitter. We could see far towardthe place where were ingulfed the guilty cities of Sodom andGromorrah, the inhabitants of which are set forth for an exam-ple, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Left the DeadSea at eight oclock, and arrived at our tent, on the plains ofJericho, at half past nine. At two , set out for Jerusa-lem, and arrived at eight in the evening.
