THE IXTERIOR 63 In 1898 an interesting discovery was made, and our view wastaken the same year immediately after. On the west side ofthis wall stood the altar to the Holy Trinity, with a tallcanopied niche on each side. On either side of these againtraces of a four-centred archshowed faintly through thesmooth ashlar at the back, andon removing the ashlar twobeautiful windows were dis-closed. They have theirsaddle-bars and stancheons insitu, in some places almostrusted through, and it is clearthat the windows have notbeen, nor were they intendedto be, glazed. Another inter-esting point is that they seemscarcely to have been finishedbefore they were walled upagain, for the masonry has noteven been rubbed down. Thisseems so unusual a treatmentfor windows of such refinement,that one is tempted to con-jecture that some zealoussubordinate of
