People buying produce at a fruit and vegetable stall, Santa Caterina market, Barcelona, Spain
Seven years in the making the renovated Santa Caterina market in central Barcelona was commissioned in 1997 and designed by the Catalan practice EMBT, the husband and wife team of Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue. The whole market of a hundred or so stalls selling fresh fish and seafood skinned rabbits and poultry and fresh fruit and vegetables is housed in this three level structure under a great wave like roof adorned with a carpet of 325 000 colourful ceramic tiles. This billowing roof hangs from steel arches supported by a steel and timber frame.
