Sprained ankle. View the hands of a physiotherapist applying a cooling cuff (cryocuff) to a rugby player's swollen ankle. The injury occurred to a player during rugby training due to the player inverting his ankle. A sprain is a tearing or stretching of the ligaments that hold together the bone ends in the joint. The fibrous capsule that encloses the joint may also be damaged. The most common site for a sprain is the ankle. An X-ray of the ankle is taken to exclude the possibility of a fracture. Treatment includes reducing swelling by cooling, resting the joint and using painkilling drugs. In this case the swelling and pain settled in a few days.
