Cockle beds on the Toft Sand in The Wash off the Lincolnshire port of Boston.
The boats here, sitting on cockle beds on the Toft Sand in The Wash, were circling tightly before the tide fell so that the action of the propellers washed sand off the cockles and made them more easily picked when the tide had fallen and the boats settled. The cockles can also be seen to have been washed into ridges. Then the crews, of two or three for each boat, got out and raked cockles until the daily allowed catch per boat, currently at two tonnes, had been collected. Then when the tide rises, they will return to the ports of Boston Lincolnshire and King's Lynn Norfolk.
