ENGINEER AND RAILROAD JOURNAL. 467 asbestos wood, a mineral product proof against the effects of acid, gases, fumes, and climatic conditions and absolutely fire proof. Thismaterial is moulded over forms and shipped in sections that aredrilled ready for erection. After being installed the bolts, nuts, and washers are coated with Transite cement to protect themagainst corrosion. This material offers many advantages for thispurpose and while it is absolutely fire proof it can be workedmuch the same as hard wood and has a tensile strength practic-ally equal to hard wood. It is very light and does not require special roof construction to support it. The material doesnot collect condensation and is not affected by expansion andcontraction. The single jacks have a length of 9 ft. and narrow up to acircular section 2 ft. 6 in. in diameter, which continues to apoint slightly above the roof line. Outside of this and restingupon the roof, leaving a 3 in. annular ojening between the two. DETAILS OF THE PITT BALANCED D00I5 FOR ENGINEHOUSES sections, is a 3 ft. circular section, arranged as is shown in thecross section of the 115 ft. part of the house. These jacks havewings extending down 12 in. on each side, preventing a clearsweep across the top of the stack, tending to blow the smokeout into the house. In the drop pit section two of these jacksare provided over each pit, being arranged as is clearly shown inthe illustration. All of the smoke jacks are supported from theroof truss, which is designed to give ample strength for thispurpose. The jacks were designed by the railroad companyand manufactured by the H. W. Johns-Manville Co., of NewYork. Drop Pits.—Drop pits for driving wheels are provided cover-ing three tracks and for truck wheels covering two separatetracks. There is one track in this section of the house that isnot provided with a drop pit of either kind. These pits areprovided with tlie usual telescopic air jack
