Place des Quatre Marmoins Charolles Burgundy France

In the Middle Ages, it was customary for some well-to-do people to carve a bas-relief over the front door of their house. Frequently, this sculpture represented a more or less grimacing caricature of the neighbour. In Charolles, you can still see some of these figurines called marmos or marmosets, including rue Baudinot. The bas-relief represents four heads not very flattering and the legend tells that the two houses in front of this plate were inhabited by tax collectors.
