This region in which thecolonists first set foot upon Virginias soil now contains thesecond largest city in the State. It is named Norfolk, andwas first established as a town in 1705, Its location for atown was selected by Act of Assembly, in 1680, which pro-vided for the building of a town in each of the twenty coun-ties then formed: In Lower Norfolk County on NicholasWise his land on the Capital Eastern Branch on ElizabethEiver at the entrance on the Branch. It is one of the fewcities of America receiving its charter from the Crown ofEngland. In 1736 it was formed into a Borough by KoyalCharter from George III. The U, S, Navy Yard is situated within the same harbor,. Confederate Monument, Hollywood, Richmond, Va. MISCELLANEOUS 331 on Elizabeth River in that portion known as Gosport, withinthe city of Portsmouth which was established in 1753. Theearly settlers of this section were mainly Scotch and Irish. This vicinity was often the scene of important militaryevents in the wars of the Eevolution, and in 1812-15, andalso during the Civil War. The most notable event occurringin that vicinity during the Civil War was the fight betweenthe first iron clad vessels ever to engage in battle. From out of Norfolk harbor on Saturday, March 8, 1862,there came the first iron clad vessel to fight a naval battlein the history of the world. This iron clad was formerly theU.
