United Kingdom /Scotland/ Elgin/ Best of British /Johnstons Of Elgin Makers of knitted and woven goods/Johnstons of Elgin was established in 1797 by Alexander Johnston. It remained within this family, being passed down through four generations, until 1920. The business was then passed to Edward Harrison and it is his family who continue as custodians today. Johnstons has been at the same site, in Newmill, Elgin, since 1797. Although the business continues to grow, the original buildings, including the family house, are still standing and remain in use. The raw material for Johnstons' cashmere comes from Inner Mongolia and is transported to, then dyed, teased, carded and spun, in Elgin, on the banks of the River Lossie.
