They then come out, and feed greedily on the buds and tenderleaves of the bulh they are on; and about the middle of May they prepare for theirchange to chryfalis, by fixing themfelves by the tail to a twig, or llender branch, with aftrong white web; after which they carry a ftrong thread of the fame over their backs,near the head. This is likevvife made faft to the twig on each fide, and in a days timethe chryfalis appears, as at fig. 2. They remain in this ftate about twenty days, whenthe butterfly comes forth, and in a fhort time afterward unfolds and dries its wings, andtakes its flight, as at fig. 3.
