All stages were observed to feed on hyphae of ascomycete fungi that are abundant on walls of the galleries of the ants and their surrondings. The discovery of the sporangia of lower fungi in the larval mid gut (Fig. 33) raises the possibility of some kind of commensalism of both these organisms but this needs further investigation. The main enemies of the larvae and especially pupae of T. corticinus are predaceous larvae of elaterids, especially of Ampedus nigroflavus (Goeze) and Crepidophorus mutillatus (Rosenhauer). From one standing tree with a deep internal hole inhabited by Lasius brunneus there can be several generations of T. corticinus, since this microhabitat can last for many years. Fallen trees or trunks with suitable microhabitats are also used, but due to a more rapid deterio-.
