Light micrograph of the nematode worm, Toxocara vitalorum. Nematodes are usually thread-like and elongated roundworms, the posterior end of the body is more pointed than the anterior. They are a large class of worms that consist mainly of parasites, though there are free-living freshwater and terrestrial forms. The parasitic forms infect both plants and animals. Closely related to Toxocara vitalorum (shown here) is Toxocara canis which causes toxocariasis: a disease transmitted from infected dogs to children. Hookworm, threadworm, and maw-worm (Ascaris) are some of the nematode infections found in humans. Magnification: x64 at 35mm size.
