The best known andhandiest reached places on Vancouver Island for the big-gest tyee salmon are Campbell River and Comox on theeast coast and Alberni and Nootka Sound on the westcoast, fifty pounders being common at all of these to thirty pound fish are common in any of theestuaries when the run of Springs is on. Spring- salmonare caught in these waters practically all the year round. InFebruary and March there is a run to the rivers but the bigrun comes in August, September and October, varying indate according to locality. There is a run of small cohoes in May and June, butthese early fish, although very game, do not average verylarge. The big- run of cohoes does not arrive as a ruleuntil the latter part of (September, when their number islegion all over the coast and the sport they give is superiorfor their size to that yielded by the springs, as they playmore on the surface. The fall cohoe is about nine poundsin weight on the average. 7. With Rod and Creel, Vancouver Island That British Columbia salmon will not take a fly is afallacy which was long since disproved. Both spring- salmonand cohoes are caught in considerable numbers every sea-son by anglers who know how and where to use a salmonfly, and give splendid sport in suitable waters. The expert with a spinning bait will be able to killmany large flsh in the rivers. Most of the fishing for salmon here is in the form oftrolling in the sea with a spoon, by which means the veriesttyro is able to kill many fine salmon. STEELHEADS—^Steelheads have been variously classedby different authorities as salmon and trout. The Provin-cial legislation classes them as trout,
