Baby mammoth \Dima\". Plaster cast of the carcass of the baby woolly mammoth named \"Dima\", whose frozen body was found in 1977 in eastern Siberia, Russia. In the foreground are well-preserved mammoth bones, including some with skin and hair attached. \"Dima\", a male mammoth, dates to about 39,000 years ago. He was between 6 and 12 months old when he died, probably by becoming stuck in mud. Scientists have chemically treated the body and have conducted an extensive study of its organs, muscles, brain, heart and cells. Woolly mammoths (Mammuthus primigenius) became extinct only a few thousand years ago."
