From the day ofJohn Stewart there had been slaves in Springfield, all, with. Map of Hampden County. that exception, black. Finally people all felt that slaverywas neither profitable nor right, and although the slaves hadalways been kindly treated as members of the family, yet thecustom vanished of itself without the passing of any lawagainst it.
