The Treatise on Fishing with an Angle first appeared in print in a 1496 revised edition of The Book of St. Albans, and is attributed to Dame Juliana Berners. The treatise describes, among other aspects of fly fishing, the proper dressing for 12 artificial flies. This is the first known description of the tying of fishing flies in the English language. The flies are numbered, and fished according to the month designated for their use. Though the descriptions are often vague, and use archaic terms, educated attempts have been made over the centuries to reproduce these historic fly patterns.
