Photograph of the Moon. 19th-century Woodburytype photograph of the Moon by Scottish engineer and amateur astronomer James Nasmyth (1808-1890). It was taken in about 1870. It was published in 'The Moon, Considered as a Planet, a World, and a Satellite' (1874) by Nasmyth and British astronomer James Carpenter (1840-1899). The borders allowed the authors to use grid references to direct readers to features of interest. The mapping of the Moon with telescopes started with Galileo in 1610, and then developed further over the centuries as telescopes improved. The far side of the Moon was not observed until the era of spaceflight.
