The surviving north wall of the nave of the church of St Oswald's Augustinian priory looking SE to the tower of Gloucester Cathedral, England, UK.
The north wall of the nave of the church of St Oswald's Augustinian priory looking SE to the tower of Gloucester Cathedral. When the N aisle of the priory church was converted into St Catherine's parish church this arcade wall became the S exterior wall of the new chuch. The Anglo-Saxon priory was founded c 900 AD on the site of a late Roman cemetery. It was built with reused Roman materials by Aethered and Aethelfleda of Mercia to house some of the relics of St Oswald. Enlarged by the Normans and converted to an Augustinian priory in 1150. After Dissolution in 1536 the rounded Norman and pointed Early English arches of the north aisle arcade were blocked to form an exterior wall. The wall contains material from the Roman period through to recent times.
