Just as I was getting rather puzzled as to howto get away anywhere out of Batavia, I learned that a smallsailing craft, on which I was offered a passage, was on the pointof leaving for the Cocos-Keeling Islands. With this outlyingspot, made famous by Mr. Darwins visit in 1836, I wasfamilar from his Coral Reefs. It did not, therefore, take melong to decide to accept an offer which was as gratifying as itwas unexpected. A
